Ernest Candèze

Ernest Charles Auguste Candèze ( born February 27, 1827 in Liège, Belgium, † June 30, 1898 in Glain, Belgium) was a Belgian physician and entomologist. His research focus were the beetles ( Elateridae ), of which he described numerous new species.

Life and work

After a preliminary training Candèze studied medicine at Liège and Paris. In Liege, he was a pupil of Jean Théodore Lacordaire entomologists, who probably had an important influence on Candèzes career as an entomologist. On Lacordaire recommendation, he joined the entomological circles in Liège, where he joined long friendships with his colleagues Félicien Chapuis (1824-1879), Edmond de Selys Longchamps (1813-1900) and Robert Mac Lachlan ( 1837-1904 ). In the aftermath Candèze assistant medical officer was in a large institution for the insane, where he married the daughter of the director and then even took the post of director of the institution, which he gave up a few years later.

Candèzes first entomological publication, a catalog on beetle larvae, written in 1853 in collaboration with Félicien Chapuis. The best known, however, was Candèzes monograph of Élatérides, the 1857, 1859, 1860 and 1863 published in four volumes. From friendship to the publisher Pierre -Jules Hetzel (1814-1886), he also wrote popular science books, including Aventures d'un grillon (Paris, 1877 ), La Gileppe, les infortunes d'une population d' insectes (Paris, 1879) and Périnette, histoire de cinq surprenante moineaux (Paris, 1886).

In 1855 he was, together with Edmond de Longchamps Sélys of the founding members of the Koninklijke Vereniging voor Belgische entomology, in whose annals Candèze supplemented his remarks on the beetle for many years. In 1860 he became a Fellow of the Royal Entomological Society.

Candèze wore at intervals along several collections of Elateridae types, of which the first and most important, that of the 1891 late British entomologist Edward Wesley Janson was. Today, this collection is in the British Museum.

In addition to his entomological research Candèze worked as a photographer. In 1874, he settled a foldable camera, called Scénographe patented.

Candèze was married and had five children. Of his son Léon (1863-1926) was also a well-known entomologist.
