Ernest Orlando Lawrence Award
The Ernest Orlando Lawrence Award was instituted in 1959 in honor of Ernest Lawrence, inventor of the cyclotron and Nobel Laureate immediately after his death by the U.S. Department of Energy. It is endowed with $ 50,000 annually and was first awarded since 1994 every two years in seven categories: chemistry, environmental science and engineering, biology ( with medicine), materials science, national security, nuclear engineering, physics.
Criteria and selection
It is awarded to U.S. scientists and engineers for exceptional research achievements (especially for research in the remit of the Department of Energy ). The winners should therefore not intended established scientists in the middle of their career be ( about 20 years after their graduation or their university degree ) and is an honor for lifetime achievement. It is connected to a gold medal with the image of Lawrence.
The award winners are nominated by 4,000 so invited research organizations and scientists and determined by a committee.
