Ernest Popplewell

Ernest Popplewell, Baron Popplewell, of Sherburn in Elmet in the West Riding of the County of Yorkshire CBE JP ( * December 10, 1899, † 11 August 1977) was a British Labour Party politician, who more than twenty years a Member of the House of Commons was, and in 1966 was as a life peer, due to the Life peerages Act 1958 a member of the House of Lords.

Life

Popplewell worked after school as signal workers at British Railways. He was first elected in the general election on July 5, 1945 as the candidate of the Labour Party as a delegate in the House of Commons and represented there until his mandate resignation on March 10, 1966 almost 21 years, the constituency of Newcastle upon Tyne West. During the tenure of Prime Minister Clement Attlee 1947-1951 he was Vice - Chamberlain of the Royal Household ( Vice -Chamberlain of the Royal Household ).

After the defeat of the Labour Party at the general election on 25 October 1951, he was 1951-1955 Parliamentary Secretary of the opposition Labour Group ( Opposition Whip ) before it was 1955-1959 Deputy Parliamentary Chief Executive Officer ( Deputy Opposition Chief Whip ). During his membership of the House of Commons he was most recently 1964-1966 Chairman of the House Committee on nationalized industrial enterprises ( Select Committee on Nationalised Industries).

Almost three months after his retirement from the House of Commons was Popplewell, who worked temporarily as a Justice of the Peace ( Justice of the Peace ) and was for his services in 1951 Commander of the Order of the British Empire, by Letters Patent of June 6, 1966 due to the Life peerages Act 1958 applicable as a life peer with the title Baron Popplewell, of Sherburn in Elmet in the West Riding of the County of Yorkshire in the peerage. Its introduction ( Introduction) in the upper house was on the side of William Henderson, 1st Baron Henderson and Arthur Champion, Champion Baron on June 29, 1966. He was so until his death in the House of Lords as a member.

In 1967 he worked with Billy Blyton, Baron Blyton as one of the " sponsors " in the launch of the long-time president of the United Union of Boilermakers, Shipbuilders, Blacksmith and Construction Workers ( Amalgamated Society of Boilermakers, Shipwrights, Blacksmith and Structural Workers ) Edward Hill, Baron Hill of Wivenhoe with as a member of the Upper House.
