Ernest Thesiger

Ernest Frederic Graham Thesiger (born 15 January 1879 in London, † January 14, 1961 ) was an English actor, who worked both in England and in the United States and participated in more than 50 films.

Life

Ernest Thesiger, in the movie credits sometimes mistakenly referred to as Ernst Thesiger, studied drama, but first worked as a painter and occasionally performed as an extra in plays on. In 1909 he had his first major success as an actor in the role of James Raleigh in the play Colonel Smith. After further successes in the theater went Thesiger, who had become involved in some silent films in 1924 to Broadway, where he played with success the role of the Dauphin in George Bernard Shaw's Saint Joan ( Saint Joan ).

In 1927 Thesiger published, now an established stage actor, his autobiography under the title Practically True. About his hobby, embroidering, he brought in 1941 the book Adventures in Embroidery out.

Thesiger, who in the unfinished silent film Number 13 1922 collaborated with Alfred Hitchcock, played his first role in a sound film in 1932 in James Whales The house of horror ( The Old Dark House ). Thesiger presented in this film, the owner of the house and eccentric atheists Horace Femm dar. In Bride of Frankenstein from 1935 Thesiger plays his most famous role, that of the mad scientist Dr. Praetorius Septimus, who like Dr. Frankenstein attempts to create artificial life. These two roles of Dr. Praetorius and Horace Femm deemed Thesingers greatest acting performances.

Between the two films directed by James Whale turned Thesiger another film with Boris Karloff, for which he returned in 1933 along with him to England. It's The Ghoul, a long gegoltenem as lost horror film directed by T. Hayes Hunter.

Until his death in 1961, Thesiger played mostly with in British productions, such as Henry V of Laurence Olivier or Caesar and Cleopatra with Vivien Leigh, but also in some American films.
