Ernst Badian

Ernst Badian ( born August 8, 1925 in Vienna, † February 1, 2011 in Boston ) was an Austrian-American historian.

Ernst Badians family emigrated in 1938 from Austria to New Zealand. He studied at Christ Church and in Oxford, England at Ronald Syme. From 1954 to 1964, Lecturer at the University of Durham. At Oxford, he received his doctorate in 1956 (D. Phil. ), In Wellington in 1962 for a second time ( Litt. D. ). Subsequently, he held various professorships in England and the United States. Badian taught from 1965 to 1969 as a professor of ancient history at the University of Leeds. From 1969 to 1971 he was Professor of History and Classical Antiquities at the University at Buffalo. From 1971 until his retirement in 1998 he taught as a professor at Harvard since 1982, as " John Moors Cabot Professor of History ." Badian is the founder and was until 2001 the editor of the American Journal of Ancient History. He was a Fellow of the British Academy (since 1965), corresponding member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, a foreign member of the Finnish Academy of Sciences.

Badian has dealt intensively with Alexander the Great, with Badian, not least in the wake of the emergence of Nazism in the 1930s, the Macedonians expressed negatively regarded. This interpretation is very influential, but also controversial to the present day.
