Ernst Boll

Ernst Boll ( born September 21, 1817 in Neubrandenburg, † January 20, 1868 ibid ) was as a private scholar, a German naturalist and historian. He is considered one of the founders of scientific research in Mecklenburg. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " stronghold ".

Life

Ernst Boll was the youngest son of Neubrandenburg Pastor Franz Christian Boll ( 1775-1818 ). He studied in Berlin and Bonn theology and the natural sciences. After graduating in 1842 he worked as a tutor in Friedland (Mecklenburg). Through his uncle Gustav Bruckner (1789-1860) in Ludwigslust excited, who had a first geological description of Mecklenburg written, he first turned to geology. To this end were made in 1846 and 1850 publications. He also dealt with botany, meteorology, Petrography and zoology.

The ever- ailing Boll was no opportunity to establish their own households. Over longer distances without steady income he lived until his death in his older brother Franz Boll (1805-1875), who was a pastor and Praepositus in Neubrandenburg the family, at the same time taught the lower classes of the local big city school and his free time with historical and church history studies sales. Both Boll brothers complemented each other. 1846 was Ernst Boll of the founding members of the Friends of the natural history of Mecklenburg. This series of publications of the Association, worked for the Boll scientific essays, particularly botany and geology, self-composed, is one of the most comprehensive scientific documentation in what was then Mecklenburg.

Politically, he was involved in 1848 in the Neubrandenburg reform movement and was an advocate of liberal views. This led to the first encounter with Fritz Reuter, from the later Neubrandenburg Reuters in time grew a solid bond of friendship.

Bolls extensive rock and fossil collection came after his death in the collection of the Museum of Neubrandenburg and is now in the Natural History Collection of the State of Mecklenburg- Western Pomerania in Müritzeum in goods.
