Ernst Gottlieb Baron

Ernst Gottlieb Baron ( * February 17, 1696 in Breslau, † April 12, 1760 in Berlin) was a German composer, music theorist and lutenist.

Life

From the age of 14 learned Baron lute playing, probably at Jacob Carl Kohaut, the father of Karl Kohaut. After visiting the Elisabethianum in Wroclaw, 1715 he took a degree in law and philosophy in Leipzig, in 1720 he enrolled at the University of Jena, where he studied with Johann Nikolaus Bach and Jakob Adlung keys Instruments and music theory. In 1728 he took over the post of lutenist at the Gotha court. In 1737 he came to the court of the Crown Prince Frederick in Rheinberg, he received immediately after appointing his permission to Dresden to travel there to purchase a theorbo, where he learned Silvius Leopold Weiss, whom he greatly admired. After the coronation of the Crown Prince to the King, Baron worked until his death as a lutenist in the much enlarged court orchestra in Berlin.

His compositional work consists primarily of sonatas and instrumental works. In the published by him in 1727, "Investigation of the instrument of the lute " the handwriting of his friend Silvius Leopold Weiss is clearly visible.
