Ernst Heymann

Ernst Heymann ( born April 6, 1870 in Berlin, † May 2, 1946 in Tübingen ) was a German jurist and legal scholar. He was privy councilor.

In 1889, he put on Breslauer Mary Magdalene from high school leaving examination. He then studied law until 1892 at the Silesian Friedrich Wilhelm University in Breslau. Heymann in 1899 professor at the Friedrich -Wilhelms -Universität zu Berlin. In 1902 he was appointed to the Chair of Law at the Albertus University of Königsberg, and two years later he moved to the University of Marburg. In 1914 he returned to Berlin at the Friedrich- Wilhelms-Universität.

Since 1918 Heymann was a regular member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences. From 1926 to 1938 he was secretary of the philosophical- historical class of the Academy, after initially until 1939 Acting Vice President and from 1939 to 1942 eventually vice president. Heymann was for many years chairman of the Academy of commission " German legal dictionary ", " German Commission " and " Vocabularium Iurisprudentiae Romanae " as well as judicial experts of the Academy.

Since 1926, Heymann was a scientific adviser to the Institute for Comparative and International Private Law at the Kaiser Wilhelm Society for the Advancement of Science, today the Max Planck Society. From 1937 to 1946 he was Director of the Institute and Scientific Member of the Kaiser Wilhelm Society.

Heymann was - until 1938, first as acting - successor Ernst Rabel, who had been forced by the Nazi regime for his resignation. As part of the evacuation of Berlin he settled in 1944 with the staff of the Institute in Tübingen on. From 1931 to 1933 Heymann was president of the Law Society of Berlin. He was also a member of the Central Board and Head of the Department " Leges " Monumenta Historica Germaniae. After the " seizure of power" of the Nazis in May 1934, he was one of the founding members of the Committee on Legal Philosophy within the National Socialist German Law Academy. In 1939, Heymann was the author of a commemorative volume for the leader 's 50th birthday.
