Ernst Julius Gurlt

Ernst Julius Gurlt (* September 13, 1825 in Berlin, † September 29, 1899 in Berlin) was a German surgeon.

He was a son of the veterinarian Ernst Friedrich Gurlt. After studying medicine he habilitated in 1853 in Berlin and of Surgery in 1862 associate professor.

He was a pupil of Bernhard von Langenbeck and over a decade professor at the Kaiser Wilhelm Academy.

In his first report on the anesthetic Statistics 1891 he reported 24 625 anesthetics. His sixth and last report in 1897 provides information on the 1895 /96 ( 29 526 anesthetics ) and 1896 /97 ( 32 009 anesthetics ). Among other things, he asked for " uebelen accidents during and after the anesthesia " ( Asphyxien and deaths ).

The statistics were one of the first quality assurance measures and led to more frequent use of ether instead of chloroform.

At its history of surgery and its exercise of 1898, he worked for 15 years.
