Ernst Krenkel

Ernst Krenkel Theodorowitsch (Russian Эрнст Теодорович Кренкель; * 11 Dezemberjul / December 24 1903greg in Tartu, .. † December 8, 1971 in Moscow) was a Soviet polar explorer and radio operator.

Life

Ernst Krenkel was born in 1903 as son of the language teacher Theodor Krenkel and its also a German-born wife Maria. His paternal ancestors had immigrated in the 18th century from Thuringia in the Ukraine.

Krenkel worked 1924-1938 on various polar stations. He was involved in the construction of the northern radio station in the world in the Arctic Franz Josef Land and presented on January 12, 1930 fro the then world record for long distance connections on shortwave, when he connects to the radio operator Howard Mason at the station EFC Byrd Antarctic expedition, Byrd was unable to establish on the Antarctic Ross Ice Shelf.

In 1931 he participated in the Polar Flight of the airship LZ 127 Graf Zeppelin in part. As Krenkel in 1934 took part in the voyage of the Tscheljuskin, he informed after the sinking of the ship to the outside world using his radio about the uncontrolled drift of the survivors on an ice floe.

From 1937 to 1938 worked as a radio operator Krenkel the expedition North Pole-1. He was able to achieve the salvation of the expedition to the multiple breakup of the ice floe by contact with radio amateurs. After the expedition, he was allowed to keep the callsign RAEM for his amateur radio station.

He was the first president of the Radio Sport Federation of the Soviet Union.

The final resting place Ernst Krenkel in the Novodevichy Cemetery in Moscow. At the grave the letters RAEM stand on a high pedestal in large capital letters with one another.

Honors

His portrait is depicted on numerous Russian stamps. Together with his colleagues the Ice, he was honored with the title Hero of the Soviet Union. As a reminder, several stations for radio amateurs to operate beyond the Arctic Circle, through connections with these stations the diploma RAEM can be worked out. Named after him was also

  • The Krenkel Bay, a broad bay of the Laptev Sea on the southeast coast of the island in the archipelago of Severnaya Zemlya Komsomolets;
  • Polar Geophysical Observatory ET Krenkel on the Hayes - island of the archipelago Franz Josef Land;
