Ernst von Hesse-Wartegg

Ernst von Hesse- Wartegg (* probably February 21, 1854 in Vienna or Prague, † 8 May 1918 in Triebschen near Lucerne ) was consul of Venezuela from 1891 to 1918 for Switzerland. Was known of Hesse- Wartegg mainly as a travel writer.

Life

Given the pervasiveness and importance of his very numerous books, as well as his notoriety among contemporaries is only very little is known about his life; about its origin even nothing at all. He appeared as Baron. His first two works were published under the name Ernst A. Hesse, in some encyclopedias of the 19th century is called as date of birth February 21, 1851, which is understandable in view of his two in 1874 and published in 1875 in Leipzig two scientific journals.

1882 married Hesse- Wartegg the German -born American opera singer Minnie Hauk. He died in 1918.

Its origin, however, is completely unknown. Sure he had the American nationality. According to an illegitimate daughter, who had great difficulties in the 1930s, boast their proof of Aryan descent, also existed traces to Venezuela. In the 1920s came his estate books, including precious travel works of the Archduke Louis Salvator, in the Duchess Anna Amalia Library in Weimar ( Weimar Classics Foundation ).

Research trips

1872 traveled Hesse- Wartegg Southern Europe and went in 1875 to the West Indies and Central America, a year later further north on New Mexico and the Rocky Mountains in the eastern United States. 1878 was followed by an exploration of the areas of the Mississippi River.

1880 went Hesse- Wartegg to North Africa. About Algeria and Tunis, he came to Tripoli in Libya, from where he crossed it out in Egypt and the Upper Nile (Sudan). In 1883 he traveled to the north-west America, and then went south to Mexico and the southern states.

1886 was followed by another trip to Mexico, where he explored the west coast of the United States. In 1887, he finally came out to the West Indies and from there to the northern part of South America. Between 1888 and 1889 he lived mostly in the United States and Canada.

In 1892 he undertook another trip to Africa. About Morocco, he returned to Europe and went to southern Spain. 1894 was followed by a lengthy stay in East Asia, 1898, he lived in Shandong and Beijing.

The German colonies of the South Seas traveled Hesse- Wartegg in 1900.

Among other things, Mark Twain and Karl May withdrawals his vividly written books, numerous details for their own works.
