Eroica Variations

The so-called Eroica Variations (15 Variations with Finale alla Fuga ) are op.35 in E flat major and a set of variations for piano by Ludwig van Beethoven.

Generally

Beethoven composed these variations in 1802, about the same time as the 2nd Symphony and the Piano Concerto No. 3. The theme of this variation comes from the cycle Contre dances for orchestra, WoO 8 ( No.7 ) and has been used by Beethoven in the ballet music to " The Creatures of Prometheus ." That is why it is also called Prometheus theme. The name Eroica Variations won this cycle until after the fact, because Beethoven used in his 3rd Symphony, the Eroica, also, in the fourth set, which is also constructed similar to these variations. Even otherwise follows the symphonic version this cycle, but with other musical substance. One can see the clear differentiation between Beethoven's piano music, and symphonic music.
