Characterization

Beethoven's 3rd Piano Concerto is the only piano concerto by the composer in a minor key.

It is regarded as his first piano concert with symphonic features, which should help the genre of the piano concerto from the salon to the concert hall. Progress in piano favored this development. As models could Beethoven Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Piano Concertos K. 466 ( in D minor ) and K. 491 have served ( in C minor ); both works were much admired by Beethoven. Beethoven's C minor Concerto and Mozart's K. 491 have in common a broken chord in the strings as head motif, a timpani cadenza in output and between cadence and final clock execution of the coda by the piano.
