Erucastrum nasturtiifolium

The Hundsrauken ( Erucastrum ) constitute a genus which belongs to the family of cruciferous plants ( Brassicaceae).

Description

Hundsrauken grow as an annual to perennial herbaceous plant which grows to a height of between 30 and 80 cm. They have simple trichomes or glabrous. While the lower, near-ground blades are staggered set higher educated sheets on both sides of the stem. The leaf blade is simple to lobed.

The flowers are borne in terminal racemose inflorescences. The hermaphrodite flowers are cruciform. The color of the petals are four ranges from a strong yellow to pale yellow to white and greenish. The style ends in a capitate or bifurcated scar. It quadrangular pods are usually formed with two keeled valves, in which the egg-shaped to oblong seeds are single row.

Dissemination

Original main distribution areas are the Mediterranean Sea area, Macaronesia and Central and Southern Europe. Further natural deposits are located in the southeastern, northwestern and northern Europe, the northern, eastern and southern Africa, the Arabian Peninsula and the Caucasus region. Today Hundsrauken are neophytes in other regions of the world.

Hundsrauken grow mainly on sunny and nutrient-rich ruderal.

System

The first publication of the genus name Erucastrum in 1826 by Karl Bořiwog Presl in Flora sicula, Volume 1, page 92 A synonym is Kibera Adans.

Worldwide, about 25 species are known. In Central Europe, occurring types are:

  • French Hundsrauke ( Erucastrum gallicum ( Willd.) OESchulz ): 30-60 cm tall, with 4-8 leaves fiederlappig yellow page sections flowers in fields and along river banks
  • Stump edged Hundsrauke or Brunnenkressenblättrige Hundsrauke ( Erucastrum nasturtiifolium ( Poir. ) OESchulz ): 40-80 cm tall, with 4-8 leaves fiederlappig yellow blunt side portions, flowers in fields and rubble
