Erwin von Zach

Erwin Ritter von Zach ( born April 18, 1872 in Vienna, † January 19th 1942 at sea west of Nias ) was an Austrian sinologist.

Zach translated almost the entire oeuvre of the Chinese poet lǐ Bái and all the poems of Du Fǔ and Hán Yù into German. However, these translations were very scattered, sometimes in very rare magazines that are fully available in only a German library. Part of his extensive work is now collected published by Harrassowitz.

Erwin Ritter von Zach was born in 1872 as the son of the later Field Marshal - Lieutenant Paul Ritter von Zach ( 1831-1891 ) and his wife Emilie Stadler of Gestirner. His older brother was the Colonel Paul Ritter von Zach ( 1870-1918 ).

Erwin Ritter von Zach came with the sinking of the Van Imhoff killed after he had previously been interned on Sumatra.
