The Eskilstunaån historically had a great importance for the economic development of the landscape Rekarne. The medieval town Torshälla and the industrial city of Eskilstuna were both founded on Eskilstunaån. The river was canalised in the 17th century, but the channel was several decades later unusable. Today Eskilstuna och Torshälla canal dates from the 19th century. Today, the river and canal is only partially mobile with small tourist boats, because of the many fixed bridges that have been built since the 1950s.
