Rekarne

Rekarne is a historical region in the northwest of the Swedish province of Södermanland County. It corresponds approximately to the present-day municipality of Eskilstuna and comprises predominantly agricultural area around the Eskilstunaån between Lake Mälaren and Hjalmaren in the southwest of Mälartals.

Rekarne means about the lines or the edges on Old Norse and was first mentioned in writing in 1167 as Reic. After an interpretation of the name could refer to the many moraines or Oser in the landscape, as Tumboåsen, the Tumbo -Os, west of Eskilstuna. According to another interpretation, it is a Ravine in Kälby at Skogstorp, south of Eskilstuna.

From the Middle Ages to the 19th century Rekarne was divided into two Harden:

  • Västerrekarne Härad (west of Eskilstunaåns )
  • Österrekarne Härad (east of Eskilstunaåns )

For this purpose, the independent cities Torshälla come (city law in 1317 ) and Eskilstuna (1659 ).

The name Rekarne place today no administrative application, but lives on in some place names, eg in the villages and former municipalities Husby - Rekarne and Råby - Rekarne, as well as in Rekarne station at Tumbo west of Eskilstuna, which is now used only as a passing loop.

Named after Rekarne are the regional savings banks, savings banks Rekarne, and the Rekarnegymnasiet, a high school in Eskilstuna.
