Espen Søbye

Pål Espen Søbye ( born July 9, 1954 in Hamar ) is a Norwegian philosopher, nonfiction author and literary critic.

Education and work

Søbye completed his studies in philosophy at the University of Oslo in 1982 with a dissertation on Ernst Tugendhat from. Shortly thereafter, he joined the State Statistics relating Sentralbyrå ( Central Statistical Office ), where he mainly dealt with historical statistics. As of July 2004, he was employed at the National Institute of intoxicants Research, where he worked on a comprehensive biography of the Norwegian psychiatrist and prohibitionists Johan Scharffenberg which was published in 2010.

Between 1991 and 1998 he edited the Norwegian philosophy journal Agora. For five years, from 2001 to 2006, he belonged to the editorial board of prose, the largest Norwegian literary magazine at. Since 2001 Søbye reviewed reference books in the Oslo daily Dagbladet.

Published in 1992 Søbye a biography of the Norwegian writer Arthur Omre, in 1995 was followed by a book about the author, art collector and Munch biographers Rolf Stenersen. Together with Jo Nesbø, he traveled in the spring of 1999, the Balkans and published in diary form his impressions of the conflicts in the former Yugoslavia.

In 2003, his book Kathe - alltid värt i Norge ( literally: Kathe - has always been in Norway), a biography of an Oslo girl with Jewish- Lithuanian background, deported in November 1942 in the concentration camp of Birkenau, where a few hours after their arrival in Age was murdered just 15 years. Søbye illuminated in this book, not least the anti-Semitism in Norwegian society, which also affected parts of the national resistance movement.

Awards

Dagbladet certified him in 2005 to be one of the " ten leading intellectuals of Norway ". In 2006, the Confederation of Norwegian critics (Norsk criticism premium ) it chose to literary critic of the year.
