Estancia Velha is a city in the state of Rio Grande do Sul in southern Brazil. It lies in the Vale do Sinos, the valley of the Rio dos Sinos, about 45 km north of Porto Alegre at the Rota Romantica. It borders on (from north clockwise) Lindolfo Collor, Ivoti, Homeboys, Novo Hamburgo, São Leopoldo and Portão.

History

The history of settlement in the area began in 1788 with the production of hemp and flax in the real Feitoria do Linho Cânhamo that provided for ships ropes and sails. From 1824 the area for colonization by German immigrants was provided. The first of the Schuster Mathias Franzen got there. Began at the end of the 19th century in addition to agriculture, the construction of the leather industry. The shoe production was the determining factor in Estancia Velha. 1930, the site for the 10th district of São Leopoldo, and finally in 1959 was self-employed as Munizip.
