The Estonian Academy of Sciences (Estonian Eesti Teaduste Akadeemia ) is the Academy of Sciences in Estonia.

Academy

The Estonian Academy of Sciences is an independent association of Estonian top scientists. Your task is to create a network of recognized experts that contributes with recommendations and opinions on decision-making in Estonia. Target group is adjacent to the professionals and the public. In addition, the Estonian Academy of Sciences strives to maintain close contact with relevant foreign institutions.

Members

The Estonian Academy of Sciences were in June 2006 to 57 well-known Estonian scientists and 15 foreign members. The members of the Academy are entitled to use the title Estonian akadeemik.

President of the Estonian Academy of Sciences is since 2004 the biologist Richard Villems, who teaches at the University of Tartu.

History

The Estonian Academy of Sciences was founded in 1938 as a learned society. With the occupation of Estonia by the USSR Academy of Sciences was declared by the decree of 17 July 1940 resolved. In September 1945 it was rebuilt as the " Academy of Sciences of the Estonian SSR " (Estonian Eesti NSV Teaduste Akadeemia ). They existed in the time of the Soviet Union of a central library and four faculties with a total of fifteen research institutes and other scientific institutions and museums.

Shortly before regaining of Estonian independence, the Academy was renamed again in Estonian Academy of Sciences in April 1989. They also received thus its present structure back as pure academic society.

Seat

The seat of the Estonian Academy of Sciences is located on Toompea in Tallinn. The historic building, the so-called Palais Ungern- Sternberg, was built in 1865 by the Berlin architect Martin Gropius. Until the Soviet occupation of Estonia in 1940 where the culture self-administration of the German minority in Estonia had their headquarters
