Estonian Olympic Committee

The Olümpiakomitee Eesti (Estonian Olympic Committee for Estonian ) is the National Olympic Committee of the Republic of Estonia.

History

On November 30, 1919 and a half years after the proclamation of state independence of Estonia, the Estonian Sports Congress decided ( Eesti SPORDI Congress ), the Estonian Sports Association ( Eesti SPORDI Liit ) and the Estonian Olympic Committee to launch and participate in the 1920 Summer Olympics in Antwerp. The Estonian Olympic Committee ( EOK ) was officially established on 8 December 1923. The first chairman was the then Foreign Minister Friedrich Karl Akel.

1924 EOK in the International Olympic Committee (IOC ) was added. At the Olympic Games in Paris in 1924 was attended by a total of 44 Estonian athletes. The wrestler Eduard Pütsep where it won the first gold medal for Estonia. In 1928 the first Estonian athletes participated in the winter competitions in St. Moritz. 1934 Johan Laidoner was elected chairman of the Estonian Olympic Committee.

With the Soviet occupation of Estonia on 21 June 1940, the Estonian Olympic Committee was banned and dissolved. It was founded in 1951 on the Olympic Committee of the USSR. In Estonia, the occupation authorities established the " Committee for Physical Culture and Sports " (Estonian Kehakultuuri yes Spordikomitee ), in which all sports organizations in Estonia were brought into line. This also ended the de facto Estonia's membership of the International Olympic Committee. Since the Western States the Soviet occupation not recognized by international law, the EOK was never officially removed from the list of members of the IOC.

Shortly before regaining the state independence of Estonia, the Estonian Olympic Committee was re-established on 14 January 1989. The first president after the Second World War was Arnold Green. With the proclamation of Estonia's sovereignty in August 1991, the EOK again took up his work at the International Olympic Committee. 2001, the Central Association of Estonian Sports ( Eesti SPORDI Keskliit ) and the EOK were united under the name Eesti Olümpiakomitee.

EOK today

The EOK today is National Olympic Committee of Estonia and the Estonian central umbrella organization of sport. The EOK belong to 64 sports federations and 12 sports clubs. Its seat is located in Tallinn.

The EOK affiliated with the Estonian Olympic Academy ( Eesti Olümpiaakadeemia ), the Estonian Foundation for Sports Information ( Eesti Sporditeabe Sihtasutus ), the Foundation for Sports Medicine ( Spordimeditsiini Sihtasutus ) and the Foundation Eesti anti-doping.

President of the Estonian Olympic Committee is currently the former Estonian Prime Minister Mart Siimann. Vice- President of the Executive Committee are EOK Andres Lipstok and Jüri Tamm. Secretary General is Toomas Tõnise.

Olympic success

Between 1920 and 1940, Estonia won at the Olympic Games a total of six gold, six silver and nine bronze medals. In all Olympic Games together athletes from Estonia have so far 25 gold, 19 silver and 27 bronze medals win.
