Estonian Swedish

Estonia Swedish ( Sw estlandssvenska ) refers to a group ostschwedischer dialects of the Swedish-speaking population in Estonia -based (Estonia Sweden) was spoken, among other things, the Estonian islands of Saaremaa (island ), Hiiumaa ( Hiiumaa ) and Runö ( Ruhnu ). Examples of estonia Swedish dialects are Rågömål and Nuckömål. Until the relocation of the Swedish-speaking population of Estonia by the Swedes to protect against the German occupiers during the Second World War in 1942 Swedish was on these islands besides Estonian colloquial and official language.

After the suppression in the Soviet time the newly established Estonia promote linguistic minorities back in 1991. So also standing close to extinction Swedish Estonia has not yet received a new opportunity. In primary schools, there are courses for Swedish Estonia, especially on the islands of Saaremaa and Hiiumaa, where the main language area of Estonia was Swedish.
