Propionic acid ethyl ester is a chemical compound selected from the group of carboxylic acid esters.

Occurrence

Propionate occurs naturally in small amounts in fruits like kiwi and strawberries before. It is also present in wine.

Production and representation

Propionic acid ethyl ester can be obtained by esterification of ethanol with propionic acid or propionic anhydride.

Properties

Propionate is a volatile, flammable, colorless liquid with a fruity odor, which is slightly soluble in water. It decomposes when heated, whereby carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and ethene can occur.

Use

Propionic acid ethyl ester is used as a solvent for cellulose ethers and esters, and various natural and synthetic resins. It is also used as a flavoring agent (eg in fruit syrup).

Safety

The vapors of ethyl propionate may form (12 ° C, ignition temperature 455 ° C flash point) with air to form an explosive mixture.
