Features

Butterfly

The wingspan of the moth is about 16 to 24 millimeters. Thus they belong to the smaller owls butterflies. They are characterized by an extremely large color variability. Thus, the color scale of the fore wings ocher yellow extends to dark russet brown or violet. The root field is always brightly colored. The irregularly serrated wavy line is applied white. The kidneys stigma is reduced to a small black dot. Cross lines and pin and ring stain missing. Means shadow and Apexregion are sometimes obscured. The most visually marked hind wings have a gray-brown tint. The fringes of the fore wings are brownish, those of the hind wings whitish.

Caterpillar

The caterpillars are yellow colored gray, have pale yellow, broken back and side back lines, as well as colored side stripes and point warts that are provided with light gray hair. Head and pronotum are dark brown.

Similar Species

Within the genus Eublemma there are species that are similar to their moth Eublemma ostrinum color, for example Eublemma parvum, which is smaller and usually lighter in color and reveals cross lines. For reliable determination should be considered in cases of doubt specialist.

Geographical distribution and habitat

Eublemma ostrinum occurs throughout the Mediterranean and is only sporadically found in Central Europe. Towards the east extends the distribution area to southern Russia, Asia Minor and Afghanistan. In occasional finds in northern Europe, such as in 1992 in the UK, it is likely to involve migrant moths. Eublemma ostrinum is found on warm, dry sites.

Way of life

Main flight period of moths are the months of June to August. In climatically very favorable areas, they are found from April to October, indicating the formation of at least two generations. As a food plant of the caterpillars gold thistle ( Carlina ) and helichrysum species ( Helichrysum ) are given.

Endangering

Eublemma ostrinum applicable in Bavaria as threatened with extinction. If moths emerge in other German states, they are regarded as a migrant butterfly or Irrgast.
