The White gum eucalyptus (Eucalyptus leucoxylon ) is a plant in the myrtle family ( Myrtaceae ). It occurs in western Victoria and southern South Australia, where it is "Yellow Gum", "South Australian Blue Gum " or called "White Ironbark ".

Description

Appearance and leaf

The white rubber eucalyptus grows as a tree reaching heights of growth of up to 15 meters. The bark is smooth or remains at the lower part of the stem, peeling but otherwise irregularly from. It is gray - brown and fibrous integrally. On the upper parts of the tree, the bark is smooth, gray or yellow and peels off in short bands or patches. Occurrence

The white rubber eucalyptus comes in western Victoria, sporadically on the middle reaches of the Murray River and in the southeast of South Australia before the adjacent New South Wales.

The endangered subspecies Eucalyptus leucoxylon subsp. bellarinensis is endemic on the Bellarine Peninsula southwest of Melbournevor where it is known " Bellarine Yellow Gum".

The white rubber eucalyptus grows in grassy, light forest and preferred moderate nutrient-rich, loamy soils or alluvial soils.

System

The first description of Eucalyptus leucoxylon in 1855 by Ferdinand von Mueller, entitled Description of fifty new Australian plants, chiefly from the colony of Victoria in Transactions and Proceedings of the Victorian Institute for the Advancement of Science, Volume 1, pp. 33-34. The type material has the inscription " In grassy plains from the Avoca to St Vincent's and Spencer 's Gulf ".

Use

Ornamental plant

The White gum eucalyptus is used in parks and gardens as an ornamental plant. From Eucalyptus leucoxylon there are some varieties. The cultivar ' Rosea' is particularly widespread and shows in the winter a lot of red flowers.
