Features

Butterfly

The lung herb Höckereule is a medium sized butterfly with a wingspan from 28 to 38 millimeters. Root and Saumfeld are gray-brown, the middle of the fore wings dark brown. The flaws are bright edged, often indistinct and occasionally formed in the shape of the number 8. Outer lateral line and a wavy line near the anterior border strongly or touch. Near the interior angle is a clear, often orange-brown shimmering, triangular spot can be seen. The hind wings are brown gray without markings. The body of the butterfly is hairy furry, at the top there is a clearly erect tufts of hair, followed the thorax end of another staggered backward sloping tufts of hair.

Caterpillar, and chrysalis

The caterpillars are usually dyed green, but can also easily shimmering purple and have small whitish spots on the sides. They are coated with fine white hair, which results in an excellent protective function to the likewise hairy forage crops. The head is green with a black drawing. The doll has a yellowish to black color.

Similar Species

Geographical distribution and habitat

The species occurs throughout much of the temperate regions of Central Europe and further east to Japan, but is often found only very locally. In the Alps, it rises to heights of about 900 meters. It inhabits mainly forest edges, deciduous forest clearings and warm relationships.

Way of life

It is in the lung herb Höckereule a largely nocturnal moths, which fly mainly in June and July. He liked to visit artificial light sources, but spurned scale bait. Occasionally he is during the day but found sucking on flowers. The young caterpillars overwinter live until June of the following year and feed preferentially on various lung herb species ( Pulmonaria spp.) And also of Common Hound's Tongue ( Cynoglossum officinale).

Endangering

In Germany the species is found only in a few places, in Bavaria it is in great danger, represented in Baden- Württemberg near threatened, in Saxony only as Irrgast and in Saxony-Anhalt it is considered extinct. On the Red List of Threatened Artenn it is in Category 2 ( high risk ) out.
