Eugen Dieth

Eugen Dieth ( born November 18, 1893 in Neukirch an der Thur; † 24 May 1956 Zollikon ) was a Swiss Anglist and Dialektologe. He is known for his contributions to German phonetics.

Life

Eugen Dieth came from the canton of Thurgau. He studied General Linguistics, English and German at the Universities of Zurich and Geneva. He received his Ph.D. in 1919 in Zurich on a theme of Middle English syntax. From 1922 to 1927 he was a lecturer in German in Aberdeen ( Scotland). In 1927 he is Associate Professor, 1947 Associate Professor of English Philology, Old Norse and General Phonetics at the University of Zurich. From 1927 to 1936 he, alongside his work at the University Editor at the Swiss Idiotikon in Zurich, 1934-1956 President of the Phonogram Archive of the University of Zurich. He died in 1956 in apparently fullest health of a stroke.

Services

Eugen Dieth published in 1938 the book Schwyzertütschi Dialäktschrift, in which he designed a standard for Verschriftung the Swiss German dialects. According to this known as Dieth font orthography is that words are written as you hear them, without regard to the usual writing of the written language.
