Eugen Ferdinand von Homeyer

Eugen Ferdinand von Homeyer ( born November 11, 1809 in Nerdin, † May 31 1889 in Stolp ) was a German ornithologist. He is regarded as the founder of scientific ornithology Pomerania.

Life

Eugen Ferdinand von Homeyer devoted himself on his father's good of agriculture and thereby began to make scientific observations and to create collections.

In 1840 he married, he also earned the 1852 Good Warbelow (now Warblewo ) at Stolp, where he had to create a spacious landscaped park. He sold it after the death of his wife in 1873 and then lived in Stolp, where he the natural sciences and especially ornithology devoted himself.

He corresponded with European ornithologists, participated with great expertise on ornithological issues and brought together an important collection of European bird species. He made ​​numerous research trips, so together with Alfred Brehm, made ​​possible by his acquaintance with the Crown Prince Rudolf of Austria - Hungary, on the lower Danube. Homeyer was a founding member of the German Ornithological Society and its president until 1883.

After his death, his collection of 20,000 bird skins came to the Natural History Museum in Braunschweig.

His nephew Alexander von Homeyer was also an ornithologist.
