Eugène Camara

Eugène Camara ( b. 1942 ) was in February 2007, briefly Prime Minister of Guinea.

Camara was appointed by President Lansana Conté on 9 February 2007 as a result of a general strike to this post, in which Conté had agreed to appoint a new prime minister should be the head of the government. The position of prime minister had been vacant since April 2006 after Cellou Dalein Diallo had been deposed by the President. Camara was in the history of Guinea, the first Prime Minister, who simultaneously held the post of prime minister.

Prior to his appointment Camara had since January 19, 2007 Minister of State for Presidential Affairs, of which he replaced Fode Bangoura. In the period from November 1997 to 2004 he was minister for higher education and research, and then Planning Minister from 2004 to January 2007.

The opposition condemned the appointment Camaras sharp and denied him as part of the old establishment cooperation. Shortly after his inauguration broke out in several parts of the country from violence among the population. Union members were proclaimed on 12 February 2007 strikes and in response, martial law was proclaimed by Conté. The proposal to give Camara a three-month probationary period as Prime Minister was rejected by the trade unionists on 20 February. On February 25 it was announced that Comte was ready to select from a list, which should be created by trade unionists and members of civil society a candidate. Then, the union ended the strike on February 27.

Conté Lansana Kouyaté elected on February 26, the new Prime Minister. This was sworn in on 1 March 2007, chaired by Camara, but in its own absence.
