Eugene Schmitz

Eugene E. Schmitz ( born August 22, 1864 in San Francisco, California, † November 20, 1928 ibid.) Was an American politician and mayor of San Francisco between 8 January 1902, July 8th, 1907 Schmitz was from a court found guilty of corruption.

" Handsome Gene " as his nickname was, was the son of an Irish mother and a German father. First, he was a professional violin player on the Columbia Theatre on Powell Street as well as President of the Musicians Union, as Abe Ruef chose him to run for the Union Labor Party for mayor. Schmitz was elected in 1902 as the successor of James D. Phelan, and was acting mayor when San Francisco was destroyed by earthquake in 1906. On the day of the earthquake, the April 18, 1906 Schmitz wanted to put together a selection of well-known politicians and businessmen, to help him in crisis management, but he received no support.

On 13 June 1907 he was found by a court guilty of corruption, and he was removed from office. His successor was Charles Boxton. Schmitz had for five years in prison San Quentin. This was the maximum sentence, which provided for the law. He immediately filed an appeal against the judgment. While waiting for the outcome of the appeal, but he had to remain in prison. On 8 January 1908, the District Court reversed the judgment, and he was released on parole, but there was still another method for corruption of. Schmitz was therefore in 1912 once again in court. However, it could be presented insufficient evidence, and Schmitz was acquitted.

1915 and 1919 ran Schmitz again for mayor, but because of his reputation he could not win the elections. He was married and the father of two children.
