EUROCAT (medicine)

EUROCAT (European registration of congenital abnormalities and twins ) is an organization that registers for Europe malformations in a network summarizing to collect epidemiological data across Europe and to provide a summary malformation register. It is their goal to achieve comparability of data between countries. It is headquartered at the University of Ulster. President of the company is Ingeborg Barisic.

EUROCAT recorded in 2005, 1.2 million births per year, equivalent to 25 % of the total number of European births. According to information collected EUROCAT 2011 1.5 million births in 20 countries.

History

The idea of EUROCAT was developed in 1974 during a session of the European Economic Community to a recommendation by the Committee for Medical Research ( CRM) back.

It was one of three " Concerted Action Project " of the First Medical Research Programme of the European Economic Community. The three projects were

EUROCAT began working with registers from the nine countries Belgium, Denmark, France, Federal Republic of Germany, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom.
