European Handball Championship

The European handball championships are played in both the men's and the women's since 1994. They take place every two years. After a qualifying meet here since 2002 the top 16 ( previously the top 12 ) teams in the European Handball Federation (EHF ) to each other. The European Championships of women and men are always held separately, but always take place in the same year. Furthermore, there are competitions for the youth and junior teams.

As an unofficial precursor to the European Handball Championship of the masters of the Baltic Cup can be viewed, which was fought from 1968 to 1989.

European Championships Men

At the European Championships Men in 2008 Denmark was able to secure the title and also won the latest European Championship, which was held in Serbia from 15 to 29 January for the first time. In 2006, France scored the first victory after previously never was able to win a medal. 2004 Germany was the first time European champion; at the current EM different from the German team before the semi finals. Overall, however, the Swedish team clearly dominated the list of winners with four titles.

European Championships for Women

Germany in 1994 was selected as the organizer of the first European Women's Championship and reached here at the same time with the second place his best result to date. Austria could 1996 have reached the third place, as we defeated Germany in the small final. Overall, the tournaments were, however, dominated by teams from Denmark and Norway.
