European Science Foundation

The European Science Foundation, short EWS (English: European Science Foundation, ESF; French: Fondation européenne de la science ), is an international organization and independent foundation to promote scientific research. It was founded in 1974 and has its headquarters in Strasbourg.

The European Science Foundation currently has 72 research institutions from 30 European countries as member organizations; inter alia:

  • For Germany, these are the German Research Foundation, the Max Planck Society, the Helmholtz Association and the Union of the German Academies of Sciences.
  • From Austria, the Austrian Academy of Sciences and the Fund for Scientific Research.
  • From Switzerland, the Council of the Swiss Scientific Academies and the Swiss National Fund for Scientific Research.

The European Science Foundation promotes and coordinates joint research projects and campaigns at European level in the interests of science. It awards annually since 1999, the European Latsis Prize. The science prize is worth 100,000 Swiss francs and is held annually in alternating fields of science.
