Eustochia Smeralda Calafato

Eustochia Smeraldo Calafato ( née: Smeralda Calafato, born March 25, 1434 Messina, † January 20, 1485 ibid ) was an Italian nun. She is worshiped in the Roman Catholic Church as a saint.

Smeraldo Calafato joined in 1449 Basico the Poor Clares, and took the religious name Eustochia. As a nun she conducted a rigorous asceticism and concentrated especially on self-mortification. 1464 she founded with the permission of the Pope, the convent of Monte Vergine, whose abbess was Eustochia.

It was in 1782 by Pope Pius VI. beatified and canonized in 1988 by Pope John Paul II.
