Eagle's beak ( Eutoxeres aquila )

Adlerschnabel hummingbirds ( Eutoxeres ) are a genus of the family of hummingbirds. To her two types are counted.

Features

Adlerschnabel hummingbirds have a body length of 12-13.5 cm, the beak length of three inches. For hummingbirds, they are quite heavy with a weight of about twelve grams. Distinguishing features are the strongly curved beak and the dotted feathers.

Occurrence

The distribution area includes Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Panama, Peru and Bolivia.

Habitat and behavior

Adlerschnabel hummingbirds prefer the shady thicket in which they individually usually looks in the undergrowth. Their flight is slow, with audible wing beats. They feed on the nectar of heliconia. Due to their weight they secure grip on probing of the corolla to the plants. They also take insects from the stems and branches. As far as known all breeding activities are carried out by the female and like all hummingbirds they lay two eggs.
