Evagrius Ponticus

Evagrius Ponticus, Evagrius Ponticus Latinized, (* 345 in Ibora, Pontus, † 399 in Egypt) was a Christian monk ( " Desert Father" ), ascetic and writer.

Life

Evagrius - student of Gregory of Nazianzus - lived with the monks in the desert Nitrian. He was ordained a deacon in Constantinople Opel. As a follower of Origen, he was posthumously condemned several times, as at the Council of Constantinople Opel (553). Evagrius played at the outbreak of Origen disputes at the end of the 4th century among the monks in the Egyptian desert, a great role as the leader of Origen monks formed, which were reported by Bishop Theophilus of Alexandria ( term 385-412 ) after the death of Evagrius and in John Chrysostom (c. 345-407 ) in Constantinople Opel were admitted.

Reception

Evagrius the founder of Eight vice doctrine (see mortal sin ), which was of John Cassian, and developed it (around 360-435 ), and acquired through his literary work and his scientific education high reputation among the anchorites. Very little of the work of Evagrius Pontikos has survived today. Most of the writings is preserved in pseudo- epigraphic form, such as Nilus of Ancyra. In the scriptures it is aligned to the Alexandrian exegesis Bible Commentaries and ascetical writings. Since many of his works have been translated into other languages ​​of the early Christian East, Evagrius became the mediator of monastic spirituality in the Orient and Occident.
