Ewarton

Parish

Ewarton is a small city in the interior of Jamaica. The city is located in Middlesex County in the Parish of Saint Catherine. In 2010 Ewarton had a population of 14,096 people. The origin of the name is uncertain Ewarton. Most likely is a combination of the family name Ewart and the Creole word sound ( Town = town).

Churches

In Ewarton there are churches of ten different Christian Denominations: Seventh- day Adventists, the Anglican Church, Baptist, Church of Christ, the Church of God of Prophecy, the Gospel Hall, Gospel Lighthouse, the King Chapel, Methodists and the Roman Catholic Church (St. Catherine of Sienna ).

Economy

The largest employer in the city is the ALCAN Bauxite - Alumina Plant. The company owns east of the city one of the largest opencast mines bauxite in Jamaica. In Ewarton there are three large supermarkets, two petrol stations and a baker, but there are in the whole place just a public telephone. In Ewarton there is no branch of the St. Catherine Parish Library, but a bookmobile visited the city at regular intervals.

From 1885 to 1947, was a direct rail connection from Ewarton to Spanish Town. The station was closed in 1947 due to lack of profitability.
