Explosively pumped flux compression generator

The flux compression generator, called in slang also FLUX is an arrangement with the aim of an electromagnetic pulse (EMP ) to produce. It is based on that a magnetic field when compression is stronger because a force has to be applied. Build this force is applied via a detonation of conventional explosives.

Construction

The flow generator consisting of a compression coil which is permeated into its inside by an explosive-filled copper tube. The gap is filled with air. To supply the coil with power, is appropriately used as a capacitor bank.

Principle

First, the capacitors discharge through the coil, which generates a strong magnetic field between the outer coil and the inner copper tube for a brief moment. Once the maximum current (typical values for some kilo amperes ) is reached, the ignition occurs. At this moment, the explosive is detonated in the copper tube, thereby inflating the tube and the surrounding coil shorts. As a result, the gap is reduced, the magnetic flux density (B) increases in the same proportion with. The magnetic flux is thus compressed, hence the name. Equally, the current ( I) increases, since B is proportional to I. Simultaneously, the inductance of the coil decreases. The explosive is so their energy to the magnetic field from enormous magnetic field strengths are possible as for a very short time. The high energy but the direction is rapidly destroyed. The processes occur in periods that are less than milliseconds, from, thereby frequencies results in the megahertz range. The rapid on and off the current occurs as electromagnetic pulse in appearance.
