Expressways in South Korea

The highways in South Korea were originally numbered in the order of their establishment. Since 24 August 2001, they are numbered similarly to the scheme of the Interstate highways of the United States. The characteristics of the South Korean highways are similar to those of the USA, red, white and blue.

Numbering

  • The main routes ( arterial routes ) are designated by two-digit numbers, the north-south lines with odd numbers and the east-west routes with even numbers. Primary main lines (ie the main thoroughfares ) have 5 or 0 as the last digit, while secondary main lines have other digits.
  • The secondary lines (Branch routes ) have three-digit numbers, the first two digits of the route number of the corresponding mainline originate.
  • The ring roads (Belt lines ) also have three-digit numbers where the first digit, however, corresponds to the respective zip code of the town and follow then two zeros.
  • The numbers in the range 70 to 99 are not used in South Korea, as they are reserved for specifications in the event of reunification with North Korea.
