The Extremadurische ( extremadurisch: estremeñu, ehtremeñu, also Cahtúo ) is a Romance language that is spoken mainly in Spain in the autonomous community of Extremadura.

According to Ethnologue, there are about 200,000 speakers and a total of about 500,000, which are able to use the language.

Dialects

The Extremadurische is usually divided into three dialects: The Nordextremadurische ( artu estremeñu ), the Zentralextremadurische ( meyu estremeñu ) and the Südextremadurische ( bahu estremeñu ). The northern variant is commonly regarded as the standard and is spoken in the northwest of the Autonomous Community of Extremadura and the southwest of the province of Salamanca. The central and southern variant is spoken in the rest of Extremadura and the belonging to Andalusia provinces of Huelva and Seville. In the Portuguese border town barrancos a " Barranquenho " is spoken -called dialect of Portuguese, which is heavily influenced by Extremadurischen.
