Ezzo (poet)

Ezzo of Bamberg ( † November 15, probably 1100) was in the 2nd half of the 11th century canon and a teacher at the cathedral chapter in Bamberg. He is the poet of the early Middle High German Ezzolieds, a hymn about the Christian history of salvation.

Life and work

The evidence for his life and work are scarce. Named after him Ezzolied called as amended by Vorauer manuscript ( second half of the 12th century ) in the first stanza a Ezzo from Bamberg as the poet of the text. In addition, the Latin life story ( Vita Altmanni episcopi Pataviensis, dating back to 1130) of Bishop Altmann of Passau ( Bishop of 1065-1091 ) mentions a canon Ezzo. This was written in the pilgrimage of the bishop Gunther of Bamberg to Jerusalem (1064/1065) a vernacular "Song of the miracles of Christ" ( cantilena de miraculis Christ ). In general, it is in the research believes that both sources refer to the same person. A note in the Bamberg Domkalendarium called the 15th of November as the date of death Ezzos; it can be dated back to the year 1100 on additional sources.
