Fabio Colonna

Fabio Colonna (also: Fabius Columna, * 1567 in Naples, † 1640 ) was an Italian botanist.

Life

Fabio Colonna was the son of Jerome Colonna ( 1534-1586 ). Trained as a lawyer, he focused his interest stumbled upon the botany. Because he suffered from epileptic seizures, was found in the books of Dioscorides for help. This recommends valerian root as a remedy for his illness. His first work Phytobasanos ( 1592) emerged as a by-product of his studies of the old botanists. 1606 followed under the title ekphrasis, the first part of another script, which was published in full in 1616 in Rome. The illustrations for his works designed Colonna itself

Fabio Colonna was one of the first members of the Regia Academia Lynceorum in Rome.

Ehrentaxa

Charles Plumier named in his honor, the genus of the plant family Columnea the Gesneriad ( Gesneriaceae ). Linnaeus later took the name. Even the epithet of Sandkrokusses Romulea columnae honors him.
