Falcarragh

Falcarragh (official Irish: An FAL Carrach or Na Croisbhealaí ) is a town in County Donegal in the far northwest of the Republic of Ireland.

Falcarragh is in the northwest of County Donegal between the towns of Gortahork and Dunfanaghy on the N56 national road that opens up as a circular route to the west and north of the county, and is the central place of the coastal district and the old Parish Cloughaneely to which, inter alia, also Gortahork heard. The first written mention Falcarraghs dated back to 1822; parliamentary Falcarragh is now part of Donegal South West.

Since the place is located in a Gaeltacht region, is its official name to FAL Carrach (Eng. include: " stone wall "); the alternative, unofficial Na Croisbhealaí has the meaning " crossroads ". The highest Celtic cross in Ireland is to be found near Falcarragh.

In Census 2006 842 persons were counted in Falcarragh; However, despite this small population of the place conveys not only during the tourist season the impression of a wealthy, prosperous small town, because here a comprehensive small-scale economic infrastructure for the entire surrounding region (quote: "the main commercial town in between Letterkenny and Dungloe " ) has formed. On the rail transport in Ireland Falcarragh is no longer connected since 1947.
