Gortahork

Gortahork (Irish and official name: Gort at Choirce; German as: " oat field ") is a townland in County Donegal in the far northwest of the Republic of Ireland.

The place

Gortahork is in the northwest of County Donegal between the towns of Gweedore and Dunfanaghy on the national road N56, which opens as a circular route to the west and north of the county, and belongs on to the district and the old Parish Cloughaneely whose central place that about 5 km northeast of Gortahork the N56 is located Falcarragh.

Since Gortahork is situated in a Gaeltacht region, the Irish name is Gort to Choirce the official name of the place. The population of the urban area was determined in the Census 2006 with 1,600 people. Classroom is part of Gortahork Donegal South West.

Despite the relatively high number of inhabitants in the urban area there are in Gortahork few shops away from the daily requirement or social meeting; for shopping, doctor visits, etc., it is common to drive in the opposite Gortahork almost mundane acting Falcarragh.

Culture

Known beyond Ireland was Gortahork by the annually held here in early summer since 2006 Guth Gafa Documentary Festival.

Gortahork is also quoted in the opening lines of the song Lisdoonvarna by Christy Moore.
