Fälensee

The Fälensee (or Fählensee ) is like the Sämtisersee and Seealpsee a lake in Alpsteinmassiv with underground drain. Its water occurs in the Rhine valley back to the surface. It is the third largest lake in the canton of Appenzell Innerrhoden.

The dialect pronunciation is [ fɛ ː ləse ː ], and the name appears in sources from the 17th and 18th century as Fähler Lake. The orthographic variation comes from the fact that in the local dialect Appenzeller both - s and - he will speak only as - ə.

Location

The lake lies in a very narrow valley cut near the mountain inn Bollenwees, nestled between Hundsteingrat and Roslen - Saxerfirst. He is best reached by bus from Appenzell to Brülisau and then with a long hike, or by Sax in the canton of St. Gallen through the Saxer gap.
