Falkland Sound
Geographical location
The Falklandsund (Spanish Estrecho de San Carlos ) is a waterway in the South Atlantic Falkland Islands. It separates the two main islands of the archipelago East Falkland and West Falkland and runs north - east to south -west. He is about 90 km long and wide at the narrowest point below 4 km. The strait was discovered in 1690 by John Strong. During the Falklands War, 1982 Sund was a theater of war. On 21 May 1982 British warships invaded from the north into the Sound, and established a beachhead in the San Carlos Bay. From this point, they retook the Eastern Isle of Argentina.
Settlements by the Falklandsund are: Port San Carlos and San Carlos on East Falkland and Port Howard and Fox Bay on West Falkland.
