Farah, Afghanistan

Province

Farah ( Pashto / Dari: فراه ), Greek also Phyra ( in ancient times ) is a city in Afghanistan. It is the capital of the province of Farah. Farah is generally identified with the ancient city of Phra or Phrada, which was destroyed in 1221 by the Mongols. After that, the city was rebuilt, but was destroyed again in 1737 by the Persians under Nadir Shah. The population of the city is 37,400 (2004), most of the inhabitants are Tajiks and Shiite Muslims ( proper name Fars ). The oasis city is drained by the river of the same Farah Rud. In the city of Farah, a district named Yazdi exists. This district consists of Shiite Muslims and Persian- ethnic population. Their origin is very interesting. They came originally from Iran, when there were no borders between Iran and Afghanistan, and settled in the city of Farah, where they founded their own district: Yazdi.
