Fáskrúðsfjarðargöng

The Fáskrúðsfjaðargöng is a road tunnel in the southeast of Iceland. The double track, lighted tunnel was opened in 2005 and is 5.9 kilometers long. He is a part of the Suðurfjarðavegurs and connects with Fáskrúðsfjörður Reyðarfjörður (and further to Egilsstaðir ). It replaces the original ( still existing ) road between the two places, which demanded a complete retraction of the fjord, only partially paved and was 60 kilometers long. The new route is 15 kilometers long.

The tunnel improves and shortens the connection of Egilsstaðir and environment Reykjavík in winter ( and more generally for trucks ): The further north extending ring road is still gravel in this section, and runs through a pass, so that the drive according to weather dangerous or impossible is. The journey along the fjords on the other hand (even with Fáskrúðsfjaðargöng ) longer but paved and largely safe for winter.
