In this novel, the forensic anthropologist Dr. Temperance ' " Tempe " Brennan gets the bodies not one behind the other on the autopsy table, but 82 at once - in nature: it is with the identification of victims of a plane crash in the nature reserve of Swain County, North Carolina, entrusted. When searching for the body parts of the victims Tempe encounters a pack of coyotes, all fighting for something for her interesting - a human foot. Due to the extensive decay state this definitely can not come from one of the plane passengers. She then starts walking around with investigations in and around Swain County, but comes across resistance in the population. Even her immediate supervisor is suddenly no longer behind her and suspended it because of absurd accusations by the service.

  • The novel was published shortly before the terrorist attacks on September 11 in the U.S.. The author was involved as a member of the state disaster response group DMORT ( Disaster Mortuary Operational Team ) on the identification of the victims of the terrorist attack. In an interview, Reich said the rescue work would have very shaken despite their years of professional experience. In the afterword to her novel, she writes: "The reality of that day surpassed anything I could have come up with as a novelist me."
