Fauxpas

A faux pas [ fopa ] (Fr. le faux pas, "wrong" from faux pas le and " step ") is a misstep in the figurative sense, ie an unintended breach of unwritten etiquette. In the 18th century, the term found its way into the German language. The term belongs to the so-called " upscale parlance ".

Causes

A faux pas is described as tactless as an infringement of style, manners, etiquette, language rules, the requirements of a particular situation or similar unwritten etiquette that is based on ignorance, thoughtlessness or carelessness. Causes may be, for example:

  • Ignorance of manners and customs of foreign cultures and social milieus
  • Incomplete general education
  • Lack of knowledge of political or historical backgrounds
  • Lack of skills in dealing with feelings, experiences and sensibilities other
  • Lack of competence in the assessment of critical situations.

The act in question was a conscious decision, but without awareness of the error contained therein.

Effects

The gaffe is not like the misfortune to misfortune or physical clumsiness due and calls - possibly apart from schadenfreude - no joy out. He is also not the result of willful infringement or aggressive behavior; in that case it is an affront. The term faux pas so also expresses that the violation did not occur in bad or abusive intent.
